This panoramic landscape photograph shows layered red and orange sandstone cliffs in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, Utah. Captured from the Shafer Trail area near the Dropping into the Canyons overlook, the scene includes a broad canyon, distant plateaus, sparse vegetation, and a pale trail in the middle distance.
Story
Captured on 9 October 2012, this elevated landscape view looks across and down into rugged canyon terrain near the Dropping into the Canyons overlook on Shafer Trail. A rounded sandstone formation dominates the left and center of the frame, while receding cliffs, flat-topped plateaus, sparse vegetation, and a pale dirt trail extend across the middle distance. Bright daylight, thin high clouds, and autumn capture conditions emphasize the contrast between rust-red rock, muted greenery, and blue sky.
